The technical functions of coding and abstracting, data retrieval, and information release are performed by Admissions and Discharge (A&D) and Health Records under the direction of the Manager. Executes additional responsibilities that are pertinent.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Expertise in the coding and abstracting of the ICD-10-CA/CCI coding classification;
- Understanding of the national coding standards and practices;
- Understanding of the procedures and practices associated with the administration of health records;
- Understanding of Acts, Ordinances, and Regulations;
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook;
- Information regarding office practices and procedures;
- Proficiency in medical terminology;
- Interpersonal abilities that are effective;
- Proficiency in operating office equipment;
- Capacity to establish priorities;
- Capacity to communicate effectively;
- Able to utilize designated reference materials, such as dictionaries, directories, coding and abstracting manuals, and the Internet.
- Capacity to demonstrate meticulousness, precision, and diligence;
- Capacity to work independently, exercise sound discernment, and concentrate at a high level;
- Cross-cultural awareness.
A graduate of an accredited Health Information Management program with two years of experience in a health information services environment in a health care setting, who is certified by CHIMA, will be the successful candidate. Demonstrated proficiency and expertise in the use of abstracting application software. For instance, 3M and Meditech are preferred.
